Core Values

“At its core, Urban Edge represents a network of local
residents who have come together to form an extended partnership dedicated to building a better Boston. “
Rev. Dr. Gloria White-Hammond

  • Develop Healthy, Sustainable and Diverse Neighborhoods: We are committed to building vibrant, accessible communities where people shop, eat, live and learn with greater hope and optimism;
  • Bridge Barriers and Build a Common Ground: We strive to create a common ground through deliberate unification strategies and thoughtful partnerships. Our vision is of a city where anyone, regardless of race, class, culture and language can share in the collective ownership of their community;
  • Support Community Leadership: We believe that effective community building must include intentional leadership development. To that end, we are particularly committed to cultivating leadership among residents and staff;
  • Engage in open dialogue regarding diversity: We recognize and examine how issues of race, gender, class, or any form of diversity, affect our activities as an organization and community citizen. In addition, we seek opportunities to include our larger constituency in candid dialogue around issues of diversity;
  • Promote Organizational Transparency: We aim to operate under full disclosure by adequately informing our constituents of our activities and conducting fair and honest community processes.

Urban Edge supports Commonwealth Compact to make Greater Boston a desired destination for people of color, immigrants, and women, in the belief that their contributions will be vital to the region’s social and economic future.
