Please come celebrate with us at Urban Edge’s 36th Anniversary on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 from 6 – 9 PM. Everyone is welcome to enjoy great conversation, wonderful locally-sourced food, and recognition of the leaders and innovators within our community.
The keynote speaker will be Bill McKibben, whose organizing has mobilized a new generation of environmental activists and stimulated clearer thinking on the problems of our age. Urban Edge is accomplishing on the community level what McKibben calls for on the global level.
The theme of our event is Building a Greener Community. Over the last nine years, we have made the local and global environment central to our community development strategy with achievements including:
- Building a mixed-use transit oriented development incorporating renewable energy and winning an EPA National Award for Smart Growth Achievement.
- LEED Silver-certified adaptive re-use of an abandoned power station as a media center with ground source heating and cooling.
- Spreading the word on the methodology and benefits of green development through GreenHUE, Urban Edge’s green housing information website.
- Reducing our carbon footprint by securing resources to green 289 units of our existing housing portfolio with improved energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor air quality and integration of renewable energy.
- Building with partners a LEED-ND Silver green neighborhood in Jackson Square with State-funded public infrastructure in construction now.
- Helping create and implement a Statewide Low-Income Multi-Family Energy Efficiency program for existing buildings by co-convening a stakeholder group with Community Anti-Poverty (CAP) agencies and utilities.

Bill McKibben is an American environmentalist and author who frequently writes about global warming and alternative energy and advocates for more localized economies.

In 2010, The Boston Globe called Mr. McKibben “the nation’s leading environmentalist” and Time magazine described him as “the world’s best green journalist.” In 2009, Mr. McKibben led the organization of 350.org, which coordinated what Foreign Policy magazine named “the largest ever global coordinated rally of any kind,” with 5,200 simultaneous demonstrations in 181 countries. The magazine included him in its inaugural list of the 100 most important global thinkers, and MSN named him one of the dozen most influential men of 2009. Mr. McKibben’s books include The End of Nature; Deep Economy; and, most recently, Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet.
Alfreda Harris has dedicated her life as a public servant and advocate for young people finding their way into adulthood. She is currently the chair of the John A. Shelburne Community Council, Inc., a board member of the Boston Police Athletic League, and the longest-serving member of the Boston School Committee.
Ms. Harris founded many outstanding, nationally-recognized youth programs, including Boston’s SAT Preparation Program, the Owen Wells Fitness Center, the Reebok Educational Partnership, and the Boston Neighborhood Basketball League (BNBL). BNBL brings together young people from the city’s diverse neighborhoods, teaching not just basketball skills but the concepts of teamwork and sportsmanship. As director of the Shelburne Community Center in Roxbury, Ms. Harris developed an array of successful athletic, recreational, educational and social service programs that engaged urban youth in positive activities and instilled a sense of pride, self-respect and a determination to succeed. Ms. Harris has touched the lives of thousands of young people through her work.
ABCD’s work in support of Urban Edge’s youth programs, the LEAN Multi-Family Initiative and other energy programs will be recognized.
