Urban Edge screens residents and if eligible, helps them secure public benefits, including WIC, SNAP (food stamps), fuel/heating assistance, SSI and SSDI, MassHealth, and LifeLine. At the time of rent recertification, every resident living in Urban Edge housing is screened, using AccessBenefits Online. Residents are also screened and connected to benefits when they are referred to Community Engagement staff due to a resident service situation.
Urban Edge also screens residents living in other affordable housing projects through the Metropolitan Boston Housing Partnership and the Preservation for Affordable Housing and connects those eligible to benefits that improve their quality of life.
In 2017, 30 families have enrolled in public benefits. Statistics show that the average annual household income of families will increase by 20% once connected to a benefit.
